Manaus Wildlife Secrets
Custom Manaus Itineraries Built From 25 Years of Field Research
Most trips to the central Amazon, namely Manaus, deliver one or two memorable wildlife encounters.
Ours deliver dozens—At very close viewing distances, perfect for photographic moments.
The difference? We cherry-picked the best wildlife locations across greater Manaus and combined them into unique itineraries that deliver approximately five times more wildlife per day than typical Amazon cruises or single-lodge stays.

Conservation Through Exceptional Wildlife Experiences
At SouthWild, we believe that the most powerful conservation tool is the experience of seeing wildlife up close in its natural habitat.
For over 25 years, we’ve pioneered a conservation model with three pillars: field research, the creation of protected areas, and sustainable economic activity through ecotourism.
Your visit to the Amazon directly supports:
- The protection of critical rainforest habitat
- Sustainable income for local communities who become stewards of wildlife
- Ongoing field research that advances our understanding of Amazonian ecosystems
This model, developed by our founder Dr. Charles Munn III—a Princeton-trained biologist who discovered new species and created 15 million acres of protected areas—has been called by experts “the best example of applied conservation biology.”
When you travel with SouthWild, you’re not just seeing wildlife. You’re helping Nature protect itself.
Why Custom Itineraries Work
The Amazon Basin is the size of the 48 contiguous United States. The best wildlife experiences in the greater Manaus area are scattered hours apart around this, the largest city in all the Amazon.
No single lodge offers more than ONE high-quality wildlife experience.
For 25 years, we’ve investigated every option in greater Manaus. We identified three hotels that serve as ideal bases for trips that deliver outstanding, cherry-picked, up-close wildlife encounters.
We don’t own any specific property in Manaus. That means zero pressure to keep you at one lodge for 3-4 nights when better wildlife awaits in different spots.
Our simply spectacular naturalist guides know all the locations, all the secrets, and keep us updated when anything new and worthwhile appears. They’re the specialists we’ve identified through decades of field research.
Your Custom Itinerary Includes
Season: January through August (optimal river levels for all locations)
Guides: Highly-experienced, English-speaking naturalists
Accommodations: Three carefully-selected hotels that are ideal bases for exciting wildlife outings in minimal time
Investment: $500-1,200 per person per day (depending on itinerary and group size)
Cultural and Scenic Experiences: Visit to the deservedly-famous Teatro Amazonas opera house and the Meeting-of-the-Waters (with outstanding wildlife encounters before seeing the confluence of the mighty Solimões and Negro Rivers).
Did you even know that when the Rio Amazonas flows east out of Peru and enters Brazil 1,544 km upstream from Manaus, the Brazilians then rename it the “Rio Solimões”. This renamed river then retains that uniquely-Brazilian name until it reaches Manaus and joins the almost equally-gigantic Rio Negro River to form the much more voluminous river that the Brazilians finally call the “Rio Amazonas”.
Optional Enhancement: Sight-seeing overflight of the beautiful Anavilhanas Archipelago, combined with Pink River Dolphin viewing in transparent, tannin-tinted water at 1-5 meters. We are the only tour operator in greater Manaus who gives you mask and snorkel to view these beautiful dolphins at 30-50 cm underwater..
The Ship + Hotel Combination
For those seeking an even more comprehensive experience, we offer a unique combination itinerary:
Four nights on a small expedition ship on the Rio Negro (with short cruising distances to maximize wildlife encounters) combined with 3-4 nights at the proven hotels to experience forest-based wildlife wonders that are inaccessible from ship.
Total: 7-8 nights offering tremendous wildlife encounters in minimal time.
This combined approach delivers the best of both worlds—the intimacy of river-based wildlife viewing with the strategic positioning of selected hotels that give rapid access to cherry-picked wildlife locations.
