Spectacled Bear Dossier

Building Individual Histories to Better Protect the Andes

Every Spectacled Bear has a story.

The SouthWild Spectacled Bear Dossier is a long-term identification project started in 2011 and operated continuously since then by the remarkable Danilo Vásquez, whom we call “the Bear Hero”. His bear conservation project was adopted by SouthWild in 2021, and we have been his major source of support since then. The project studies natural behavior of the wild bears of “Bear Canyon”, an 800-foot-deep gorge that starts at the edge of Danilo’s avocado orchard. Danilo and the team recognize individual Andean Bears through their unique facial markings.

Much like human faces, no two Spectacled Bears share the same pattern of white facial markings, many of which look like white clown glasses. By documenting these natural markings, which don’t change over the years, we can identify individuals, follow reproductive histories, and better understand the ecology of one of South America’s most elusive and endangered animals.

Beyond its scientific value, the dossier allows us to transform anonymous wildlife into known individuals with documented life histories. Visitors who return to Bear Canyon often have the remarkable opportunity to resight specific bears that they photographed years before, witnessing cubs grow into adults and mothers raising successive generations.

Today, the Spectacled Bear Dossier directed by Danilo Vásquez represents one of SouthWild’s growing wildlife identification initiatives, joining similar long-term projects developed for Jaguars in the Pantanal, Macaws in the Peruvian Amazon, and King Penguins on Tierra del Fuego. Together, these projects demonstrate how long-term photographic monitoring can become a powerful tool for conservation, research, and public engagement.

Because protecting wildlife begins with knowing each individual that calls these extraordinary landscapes home.
