In the 1990’s, the readers of Condé Nast Traveler Magazine named Machu Picchu the world’s number one monument for overall experience, beating out the Great Pyramid, the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall, and the Eiffel Tower. We often have heard those who have not yet seen this world-famous Inca citadel say “it must be so touristy that it’s not worth visiting”, but they are very wrong.
Since 1976, the CEO of SouthWild has visited Machu Picchu more than 40 times, and he finds it worth visiting any day of the year, rain or shine, with or without a lot of visitors. The site is so huge that even on its busiest days, the 2,500 visitors almost disappear among the 15 acres (6.44 hectares) of rockwork.
Our favorite months to have Machu Picchu tours are December through March, when brooding clouds and even rain scare away most visitors and intensify the mysterious, mystical character of the site.
Machu Picchu perhaps is the only monument on Earth that is much more dramatic in person than even the finest photos of the site.
