SouthWild Pantanal Lodge from the Pixaim River

Pantanal, Brazil

SouthWild Pantanal Lodge

Designed for complete immersion in the Pantanal ecosystem, the lodge allows guests to experience exceptional wildlife viewing from the moment they arrive, especially remarkable encounters with Ocelots, one of the region's most elusive and sought-after wild cats.

Among the more than 50 lodges scattered across the vast, UK-sized Pantanal, SouthWild Pantanal Lodge (SWP) stands apart as one of the region’s most exceptional wildlife and photography destinations. Internationally recognized by professional wildlife photographers, naturalists, and birders, the lodge has earned a reputation for offering some of the finest close-range wildlife encounters in all of South America. Its global recognition expanded even further in 2017, when one of SouthWild’s guaranteed wild Ocelot encounters was featured live worldwide during National Geographic’s landmark television special Earth Live.

Nestled on the forested banks of the wildlife-rich Pixaim River and located just 2.5 kilometers off the legendary Transpantaneira Road, SouthWild Pantanal Lodge combines privileged access to extraordinary biodiversity with comfort, functionality, and immersive nature experiences. The lodge’s strategic location within pristine gallery forest habitat places guests directly in one of the richest wildlife corridors in the entire Pantanal.

SWP offers remarkable, high-probability opportunities to observe and photograph wild Ocelots at 5-8 meters in good light, Black-and-Gold Howler Monkeys at only 5 meters at eye level in natural trees, and the world’s most cooperative nesting pair of Jabiru Storks.

In 2026, SWP introduced a new activity, and that is contemplative, two-hour-long boat outings on a 5-10-km-long stretch of the private, 25-meter-wide Cassange River. As far as we can tell, these are the first motorboat outings ever carried out on that river, which is remarkably scenic and undisturbed. SWP is proud to be the first to test and then approve and operate boat outings on that river, and SouthWild has obtained a private, exclusive concession for operating boats on that river.

The most celebrated wildlife experience at SWP is our world-famous Ocelot Experience, the original of only two location on Earth (and the other is at SouthWild’s PJP lodge) that offer high-probability of seeing and photographing wild Ocelots in fully natural surroundings in excellent lighting conditions. These elusive cats, often called the “phantoms of the forest,” are observed on natural vines and forest perches, creating unparalleled opportunities for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

The lodge is equally renowned for its TWO extraordinary bird observation towers. The first of these towers is now 20 years old and is mounted next to an active Jabiru Stork nest. That tower is 12-m tall and is located only 150 m from SWP lodge and offers eye-level views of the stork nest at a distance of only 16 meters. A second observation tower is a 16-m-tall tower located 1,200 m from the lodge. This second tower is located within gallery forest and provides sweeping canopy-level views of parrots, Snail Kites, monkeys, and countless forest birds.

SouthWild Pantanal Lodge was designed with serious naturalists and photographers in mind. Its 15 air-conditioned guest rooms feature spacious work tables, adjustable office chairs, multiple electrical outlets, Wi-Fi, private bathrooms with hot showers, and practical layouts that prioritize comfort and efficiency after long days in the field. Unlike many safari lodges that emphasize decorative luxury, SWP embraces a more scientific and nature-focused philosophy, investing heavily in wildlife research, conservation initiatives, and infrastructure that enhances wildlife observation rather than theatrical “safari chic” aesthetics that certainly can be attractive, but do not increase the quality of wildlife viewing.

The lodge also pioneered sustainable hospitality practices in the Pantanal by becoming the first lodge in the region to eliminate plastic water bottle waste through complimentary chilled drinking-water stations available to guests at all times.

The surrounding gallery forest contains over four kilometers of scientifically designed wildlife trails, among the most bird-rich and mammal-rich trail systems anywhere in the Pantanal. Carefully planned for both birding and wildlife photography, these trails allow guests to encounter two species of monkeys, dozens of territorial songbirds, nocturnal mammals, and a remarkable diversity of tropical forest wildlife.

Wildlife viewing at SouthWild Pantanal Lodge changes beautifully throughout the year. The cooler months of June, July, and November are especially prized for photography due to cleaner air, comfortable temperatures, and outstanding Jaguar activity in Jaguarland, which is 80 km down the Transpantaneira Road from SWP. August brings dramatic concentrations of herons, storks, caimans, and Capybaras along the Transpantaneira, while seasonal flowering events in July and August transform the landscape with brilliant yellow cambará blossoms and the iconic pink trumpet trees, respectively.

Dining at SWP is itself part of the experience. The spacious, newly-rebuilt and expanded, bird-friendly dining room offers panoramic views of surrounding forest and wildlife while guests enjoy abundant buffet-style meals featuring regional Brazilian cuisine, vegetarian and vegan options, and dishes prepared by some of the Pantanal’s most talented local chefs. Wildlife sightings from the restaurant are common, with Capybaras, Jabirus, Tapirs, and even Jaguars occasionally visible from the dining area itself.

We feel that the SWP dining room is the most atractive dining room in all the Pantanal, and the special bird-safe bouncy screening mounted 15 cm away from the huge glass windows prevent bird strikes from hurting the birds. As far as we know, our new bird-safe dining room is the only building in the history of the Pantanal that thought about bird welfare and bothered to spend the extra money needed to install the bouncy safety screens outside all the wrap-around, floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

More than simply a lodge, SouthWild Pantanal Lodge represents a pioneering model of conservation-based ecotourism, where science, photography, wildlife protection, comfort, and authentic immersion in nature come together in one of the most biologically extraordinary places on Earth.
