Brazil expeditions

Experience Brazil beyond the ordinary through intimate encounters with some of South America's most extraordinary landscapes and wildlife.

Overview

SouthWild Brazil

At nearly the size of the continental United States, Brazil is by far the largest country in South America and one of the world’s greatest wildlife destinations. Vast, biologically rich, and astonishingly diverse, it offers some of the most rewarding wildlife encounters on Earth.

Over the past five decades, Brazil has experienced what SouthWild calls the Brazilian Ecological Miracle, a remarkable ecological recovery driven by extensive protected habitats, private conservation initiatives, and the historic decision to outlaw all sport hunting of native wildlife more than fifty years ago.

Freed from hunting pressure, wildlife populations rebounded dramatically across many regions of the country. Even elusive predators such as Jaguars and Giant Otters flourished once again in protected ecosystems, creating one of the most extraordinary wildlife recovery stories in the world.

Today, wildlife in Brazil is not only abundant, but also exceptionally visible and remarkably tolerant of human presence, especially in the Pantanal. A single day exploring the northern Pantanal can reveal more charismatic wildlife than many travelers encounter during an entire week in other safari destinations around the globe.

At the center of SouthWild’s Brazil expeditions lies the Pantanal, the largest tropical wetland on Earth and one of the finest wildlife-viewing regions anywhere in the world. Jaguars patrol riverbanks in daylight, Giant Otters fish through quiet waterways, and wildlife encounters unfold naturally from safari boats, floating lodges, and remote river corridors.

Brazil also offers extraordinary opportunities to observe Pink River Dolphins, Maned Wolves, Capybaras, Tapirs, Caimans, and countless other species at remarkably close range and often for extended periods, creating exceptional opportunities for photographers of every level, even those capturing moments with a smartphone.

The country’s birdlife is equally spectacular. Hyacinth Macaws, toucans, Scarlet Ibises, hummingbirds, tanagers, and hundreds of other species thrive across SouthWild’s carefully selected destinations, making Brazil one of the premier birdwatching destinations in the Americas.

Beyond its wildlife, Brazil possesses one of the richest cultural and ecological mosaics on Earth. In the Amazon, immense rainforest reserves protect not only extraordinary biodiversity, but also the ancestral territories and traditions of indigenous peoples. Approximately 28% of the Brazilian Amazon remains under indigenous stewardship, a powerful example of how traditional cultures continue to play a vital role in preserving one of the planet’s greatest natural treasures.

SouthWild expeditions are designed to immerse travelers in this extraordinary natural abundance while directly supporting conservation initiatives, scientific research, private reserves, and local communities dedicated to protecting these ecosystems for future generations.

We invite you to discover the wild heart of South America through SouthWild’s conservation-driven journeys across Brazil’s most extraordinary landscapes.
