A coastal Brown Bear at Brown Bear Bay, Chinitna Bay, Alaska

Alaska, USA

Brown Bear Bay Lodge

A private, 160-acre wilderness retreat on Chinitna Bay bordering Lake Clark National Park, with a ground-level photographic blind and close-range viewing of coastal Brown Bears for a maximum of 12 guests.

The World’s Most Outstanding and Exclusive Brown Bear Experience

Hidden along the wild coastline of Chinitna Bay, on the western shores of Cook Inlet, Brown Bear Bay offers one the most intimate Brown Bear experience in Alaska. Surrounded by pristine wilderness and bordered by Lake Clark National Park, this private, protected sanctuary combines exceptional, close-range bear viewing with luxurious accommodations in complete harmony with nature.

Unlike crowded bear-viewing destinations, Brown Bear Bay welcomes only a handful of guests at a time, allowing extraordinary encounters with Alaska’s iconic coastal Brown Bears in an atmosphere of tranquility, exclusivity, and respect for wildlife.

An Exclusive Wilderness Retreat

Set on 160 acres (65 hectares) of private land, Brown Bear Bay has been carefully designed to immerse guests in the surrounding landscape while maintaining the highest standards of comfort.

The lodge accommodates a maximum of 12 guests in just four spacious private suites, each good for up to three persons. This small number of guests ensures personalized service and an intimate wildlife experience.

Each suite offers 37 square meters (400 square feet) of thoughtfully designed living space that features:

  • Private ensuite, hot-shower bathroom
  • Luxurious beds
  • Thermostatically controlled fireplace
  • Large, panoramic windows
  • Private, wrap-around deck
  • High-speed Wi-Fi
  • 24-hour electricity
  • Screened windows to allow for natural ventilation on warm days

After a day in the field, guests return to a peaceful retreat where Alaska’s wilderness remains the centerpiece of every room.

A Lodge Designed Around Wildlife

At Brown Bear Bay, the philosophy is simple: the bears always come first.

Rather than forcing wildlife to adapt to people, every aspect of the lodge has been planned to allow bears to move naturally on their favorite, traditional trails through the landscape without any structures blocking their movements.

While on your private deck, in your suite, or in the dining room, it is not unusual to watch Brown Bears wandering across meadows or along forest edges.

These spontaneous encounters create an experience unlike any traditional wildlife lodge.

Exceptional Bear Photography

Brown Bear Bay was designed with wildlife photographers in mind.

Guests enjoy access to a professionally designed ground-level photographic blind, open 24 hours a day, providing outstanding opportunities to photograph coastal Brown Bears at 2 to 6 meters from eye level in complete safety.

Additional photography opportunities are available from elevated viewing decks, private suite balconies, and throughout the property, where bears are frequently observed as they move naturally through their habitat.

Because the lodge is located on private land, guests also benefit from a peaceful environment far removed from the crowds often found at public bear-viewing locations.

Finally, as we are next to the national park but not in it, our guests can use drones, under our supervision. We know which individual bears do not mind drones, and you can use your drone to photograph bears, but under the close supervision of our highly trained guides. If we see that a bear is becoming even slightly irritated by a drone, we make the guest pull the drone back and leave the bear alone.

The Main Lodge

The heart of Brown Bear Bay is a beautiful Swiss style log chalet, where guests gather between excursions to enjoy freshly prepared meals, relax beside the fireplace, and exchange stories from the day’s adventures.

Expansive windows frame the surrounding meadows, mountains, and forests, meaning wildlife sightings often continue even during breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

The atmosphere is warm, relaxed, and deeply connected to the surrounding wilderness.

A Photographer’s Paradise

Brown Bear Bay is more than a place to see bears. It is a destination created for photographers, filmmakers, and wildlife enthusiasts seeking authentic natural behavior in spectacular surroundings.

The combination of exclusive access, private land, intimate group sizes, and thoughtfully designed photographic infrastructure allows guests to capture remarkable images while wildlife continues its daily routines undisturbed.

Experience Alaska at Its Wildest

From spring through early autumn, Brown Bear Bay offers extraordinary opportunities to observe Alaska’s magnificent coastal Brown Bears in one of North America’s most pristine wilderness landscapes.

Whether watching a bear emerge from the forest at dawn, photographing wildlife from the lodge’s dedicated blind, or simply enjoying the tranquility of Alaska from your private deck, every moment at Brown Bear Bay reflects SouthWild’s philosophy of immersive, conservation focused wildlife travel.

With only four guest suites and extremely limited availability each season, Brown Bear Bay offers one of Alaska’s most exclusive and unforgettable wildlife experiences.

What Our Guests Say

I have to be honest, I have been photographing bears for a long time. I am in the fine art business with my print and frame shop. Been photographing professionally for about 18 years, photographing bears the majority of that, been coming to Alaska for 10 years photographing bears, which is part of the reason why I am enjoying and connecting so much with Justin and Brad, but I have never had a time like this. This has been extraordinary. My experience this weekend has brought me back to the first time I came to Alaska and the magic it was. Since then, it’s been a challenge watching all the workshop leaders take over.

Brown Bear Bay is untouched and truly a gem. I don’t know of any other place in Alaska that compares truly. The challenging thing for me from here out is to figure out how I get back here every year from here on out as I don’t know how I could photograph bears without Justin or Brad. I don’t know how I could photograph in another area again. This place is special and I don’t think first time guests realize how special it is.
