A Galapagos giant tortoise on Santa Cruz Island, Ecuador

Ecuador expeditions

Ecuador concentrates Andean mountains, Amazon lowlands, Spectacled Bears, Galapagos wildlife, and stylish lodge extensions in a country smaller than many single South American regions.

Overview

SouthWild Ecuador

A country roughly the size of the U.S. state of Nevada, and slightly smaller than Italy, Ecuador may be the world’s most concentrated repository of biological, geographical, and cultural diversity. Within a remarkably compact territory, travelers encounter towering Andean volcanoes, Amazon rainforest, Pacific coastlines, cloud forests, indigenous cultures, and the legendary Galápagos Islands.

Ecuador is home to ten peaks exceeding 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) in elevation. The highest of them, Chimborazo, rises to 6,268 meters (20,564 feet), permanently crowned with snow and glaciers. Because the Earth bulges at the equator, the summit of Chimborazo is actually the furthest point on Earth from the planet’s center, a remarkable geographical distinction found nowhere else.

Approximately 45% of Ecuador lies within the Amazon Basin, while the Andean spine traverses the center of the country and the western lowlands descend toward the Pacific coast. This extraordinary geographical compression creates one of the highest biodiversity densities on the planet.

The Ecuadorian Amazon is lush, humid, and immensely species-rich. While much of the forest remains intact, wildlife observation in Ecuador’s Amazon can be more challenging than in some of SouthWild’s preferred rainforest destinations in southeastern Peru and Brazil. For this reason, travelers combining Ecuador with deeper Amazon wildlife experiences often choose to extend their journeys into the Peruvian Amazon.

SouthWild’s Ecuador expeditions focus primarily on two truly exceptional wildlife experiences found nowhere else in such combination: Spectacled Bears and the Galápagos Islands.

The Spectacled Bear, the only bear species native to South America, is one of the world’s most attractive and elusive large mammals. Although distributed across portions of the tropical Andes, it is notoriously difficult to observe in the wild throughout most of its range. SouthWild’s carefully selected Andean cloud forest lodges in Ecuador provide some of the finest opportunities anywhere on Earth for reliable sightings of these extraordinary bears in their natural habitat.

The second great wildlife treasure of Ecuador is, of course, the Galápagos Islands, one of the most important natural laboratories in scientific history and among the most unique wildlife destinations on Earth. Here, travelers encounter fearless wildlife, volcanic landscapes, marine iguanas, giant tortoises, Blue-footed Boobies, sea lions, penguins, and countless endemic species that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.

SouthWild approaches the Galápagos differently from many operators. Our recommendations are shaped by deep local expertise and extensive on-the-ground knowledge developed through long-standing partnerships with some of Ecuador’s most experienced naturalists and ecotourism specialists.

Beyond its wildlife and landscapes, Ecuador also offers elegant haciendas, sophisticated lodges, beautiful colonial cities, colorful indigenous markets, and exceptional hospitality throughout the country.

We invite you to discover Ecuador’s astonishing concentration of nature, culture, geology, and wildlife through SouthWild’s carefully curated journeys into one of the most diverse countries on Earth.
