About SouthWild

Where extraordinary wildlife encounters drive conservation

Led by co-CEOs Dr. Charles Munn and Layra Martins, SouthWild was born from a simple conviction: the most effective way to protect wildlife is to make it more valuable alive than lost.

For more than four decades, the people behind SouthWild have been pioneering conservation-driven tourism across the Americas, transforming some of the planet's most extraordinary wildlife destinations into powerful engines for environmental protection and sustainable development.

What began as dedicated fieldwork focused on macaw conservation in the Peruvian Amazon evolved into a clear vision: tourism, when thoughtfully designed and responsibly managed, can protect vast natural landscapes while delivering unforgettable experiences to travelers.

Today, SouthWild is recognized as one of the leading wildlife travel specialists in the Americas, offering exceptional journeys that connect guests with some of the world's most spectacular species and ecosystems.

A Legacy Built in Nature

SouthWild's story is rooted in conservation initiatives launched throughout South America in the 1980s.

Members of our team have contributed to the creation and protection of millions of hectares of tropical forests, national parks, Indigenous territories, and nature reserves across the Amazon Basin and the Andes. Along the way, they helped develop pioneering ecolodges, wildlife research programs, environmental education initiatives, and community-based conservation projects that demonstrated how nature tourism can generate lasting protection for biodiversity.

These efforts helped establish some of America's most successful conservation tourism models and laid the foundation for what would eventually become SouthWild.

Redefining Wildlife Viewing in the Americas

SouthWild gained international recognition for helping transform Brazil's Pantanal into one of the world's premier wildlife destinations.

Through the development of innovative wildlife-viewing techniques, investment in local conservation partnerships, and the creation of responsible tourism models centered around iconic species such as the jaguar, giant otter, hyacinth macaw, giant anteater, and tapir, SouthWild helped demonstrate that wildlife can be a valuable economic asset for local communities and landowners.

Our jaguar-viewing programs, in particular, have played a significant role in establishing the Pantanal as one of the most reliable places on Earth to observe wild jaguars, creating a conservation success story that continues to inspire similar initiatives throughout the region.

Conservation Through Experience

We believe that every meaningful conservation effort begins with connection.

When travelers witness a jaguar emerging along a riverbank, observe a family of giant otters from just a few meters away, or watch flocks of macaws crossing the Amazonian sky at sunset, they develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world and a stronger commitment to its protection.

Every SouthWild journey is designed not only to reveal the extraordinary richness of wildlife but also to support the ecosystems, protected areas, researchers, guides, landowners, and local communities that make these experiences possible.

Looking Ahead

SouthWild's vision extends far beyond individual destinations.

Our long-term mission is to create "nature fortresses" and "weapons of mass conservation" by uplifting both people and wildlife through the expansion of high-end conservation tourism across a continent-wide network of natural fortresses. Through transformative nature experiences, we seek to generate sustainable economic incentives that contribute to the protection of some of the world's most important ecosystems.

From the wetlands of the Pantanal to the vast forests of the Amazon; from the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado to the Andean highlands; from the wild landscapes of Patagonia to the continent's most spectacular deserts; from the Pacific Coast to the conifer forests of the far north and the Arctic, we remain committed to creating transformative journeys that inspire travelers and contribute to a future where wildlife, ecosystems, and human communities thrive together.

Because the greatest journeys should leave a lasting legacy of dignity, happiness, and positive impact for all living beings long after the adventure ends.
